5 Tips for Storing an Area Rug

Blog

Using your storage unit to store an area rug can be extremely convenient, especially if you are in the process of moving or if you switch out your rugs depending on the season. Since area rugs can be expensive, being able to store them and use them again is a great way to save yourself some money. To ensure that your rug is stored properly without any damages, you will want to consider these five tips:

  1. Clean the Rug: Before placing the rug in storage, you should have it cleaned or at least vacuum it. It's definitely ideal to have it professionally cleaned if the rug has been used a great deal in a high traffic area or if you have pets or kids in the home. Be sure that, once it is cleaned, it is completely dry so mold doesn't grow.
  2. Use Insect Repellent: Tiny insects can easily make their way into your storage unit, especially carpet loving insects, such as moths. To keep insects from eating away at the rug, you will want to use an insect repellent on the rug and around the perimeter of the storage unit.
  3. Store the Rug Properly: Don't lay the rug out flat in your storage unit or simply fold it in half. Instead, you will want to roll the rug up completely and then wrap it. This is the best way to protect against moisture and mold growth. When you wrap the rug, however, be sure that you give it breathing space so that moisture cannot build inside of the wrap, but can instead escape out from it.
  4. Keep It Off the Floor: Even though the floor in the storage unit appears clean, it's not a good idea to store your rug on the floor. The best way to to do is to place the rug on pallets on the floor. Don't stack anything on top of it, or it will crack the foundation of the rug.
  5. Regularly Check on Storage Unit: Finally, you want to be sure that you are checking on your storage unit regularly, especially if it is not a climate controlled unit. During this time, you can check for signs of mold and you can even apply more insect repellent.

When considering the above five tips, you can be sure that you area rugs are properly stored without any damages being caused. For more storage advice, talk to facilities like Lake County Storage of Round Lake Heights.
